Who should remove asbestos?

If asbestos has been identified and needs to be removed, you will most likely require a Licensed Asbestos Removalist. The only exception to this rule is that if the asbestos is 10 square metres or less and is non-friable asbestos in good condition. In this case there a competent person should be engaged and they must have controls in place to ensure it is carried out safely.

There are two types of Removalists – Class A and Class B

  • Class A removalists can remove friable and non-friable asbestos.
  • Class B can only remove non-friable material.

Class A and Class B removalists must hold a licence issued by Worksafe NZ. Click here to view the register. Non-licensed Removalists could put you at risk via poor removal techniques resulting in the release of asbestos fibres, which in turn pose a health risk and can cross contaminate other areas of your property.
